The Principal Newsletter 08.29.2013

Cell Phones in the Parking Lot

This is information regarding a NEW STATE LAW became effective on September 1, 2013.

The new law, Section 425.4252 of the Transportation Code, prohibits the use of a wireless communication device while operating a motor vehicle on the property of a public elementary, middle, junior high, or high school for which a local authority has designated a school crossing zone, during the time a reduced speed limit is in effect for the school crossing zone, unless:

(1) the vehicle is stopped; or

(2) the wireless communication device is used with a hands-free device.

This means that during the time that the “school zone” lights are flashing, it is a misdemeanor offense for a driver to use a cell phone while the vehicle is moving anywhere on school property — not just on the road in school zones, but also when driving through the parking lot and drop-off lanes—unless he or she using a hands-free device. It is an affirmative defense if the driver is making an emergency call.

HALL PASS ID System

We have a new security system in the front office this school year called HALL PASS. This program asks the visitor coming in to the building to scan his/her driver’s license in order to obtain a pass complete with photo and date as he/she enters the halls of the school. By scanning the visitors’ driver’s license, within seconds the HALL PASS program determines if the visitor is listed on the National Sex Offender Registry and Violent Offender Against Youth Database. Visitors not flagged are issued a photo ID badge, good for only that day. The system stores the license information so returning volunteers or visitors only have to provide their name, which is rerun through the database. We will also keep your driver license in the front office until you return to check-out.

We are encouraging our frequent visitors to use a Key FOB HALL for easy entry and exit of the school. Our front office staff can issue a blue RFID (Radio Frequency ID) Key Fob for $5.00. The visitor only needs to wave the FOB over the HALL PASS RFID Reader to check-in and check-out. Additionally, if you have children attending other schools in the district, this FOB will work there too. We hope you will find this new system easier for checking into and out of school.
